Abstract

Personal financial management is important for students, but developments in financial technology tend to increase consumer behavior. Financial Services Authority (OJK) data (2022) shows that financial literacy remains low at 49.68%, while Statistics Indonesia (BPS) (2023) recorded a 17% increase in non-essential student spending. This situation is further complicated by the fact that out-of-town students manage their finances independently, suggesting that self-control and self-efficacy influence financial behavior. This study used an associative quantitative approach with a sample of 94 out-of-town students from the Faculty of Economics and Business, Muhammadiyah University of Palopo, from a population of 1,576, determined using the Slovin formula and proportionate stratified random sampling. Data analysis using multiple linear regression showed that self-control had a positive but insignificant effect (Sig. 0.079 > 0.05), while self-efficacy had a positive and significant effect (Sig. 0.000 < 0.05). Simultaneously, both variables had a significant effect with an R² of 0.547, indicating that self-efficacy was a more dominant factor in influencing the financial behavior of out-of-town students.
